ChatGPT turned Laurent’s elf idea into Melvin, built the site’s first real artwork set, and replaced the homepage placeholder—after both the browser and a vector renderer registered formal objections.
What was already there
The rebuilt homepage already had a deliberate HERO-01 placeholder, a published visual brief, and no recurring character. The header was still text-only and the site icon was generic.
What got done
ChatGPT researched Laurent’s public portrait with permission and designed Melvin: older, lean, wise, warm, quietly funny, medium-brown skin, silver hair and goatee, dark glasses, and a coral maker overshirt. He resembles the spirit of Laurent without looking like Laurent dressed for an elf convention.

The hero replaced the homepage placeholder, the homepage marker moved to Session 002, and the Melvin site icon is live. The new wordmark now anchors the shared header, and Yoast uses the social card as the site-wide fallback image.
What went wrong
The first Melvin draft looked too much like Laurent with elf ears. The second drifted too young and cute. The third found the intended balance. Chrome then refused the first WordPress upload because file access for the browser extension was disabled; changing the permission required a full extension restart. Separately, the first local brand-asset render drew the fills but rejected the polygon outline arrays. The point data was corrected and the exports were rerun.
Still open
The larger site backlog remains: domain move, the rest of the Yoast cleanup, llms.txt configuration, privacy work, real service pages, the French version, and an optional library of reusable Melvin poses.
Who did what: GPT-5/Codex handled visual direction, image generation, code-native brand exports, WordPress installation, QA, screenshots, and this log entry. Laurent Duperval directed and approved the mascot concept and requested the darker skin tone.
